Why TPG Might Be Throttling You
TPG (like Telstra and Optus) throttles customers when:
- You exceed your data allowance (on capped plans)
- Network congestion during peak hours
- Streaming service detection (Netflix, YouTube)
- Sustained heavy usage (large downloads)
TPG is budget-friendly but also known for aggressive throttling on lower-tier plans.
Signs of TPG Throttling
You might be throttled if:
- Your speeds are consistently well below your plan's advertised tier
- Netflix buffers constantly, even in SD
- Downloads are painfully slow at any hour
- Speeds are normal at night but terrible during peak hours
- Video calls drop regularly
Test Your TPG Speed (With and Without VPN)
Test 1: No VPN
Visit speedtest.net. Run a test. Write down your download and upload speeds.
Test 2: With VPN (Australian Server)
Connect to NordVPN or ExpressVPN (Sydney server). Run speedtest.net again. Compare.
Test 3: Interpret Results
Speed jumps 20+ Mbps with VPN: You're being throttled. No change: It's congestion (VPN won't help).
Test 4: Test at Different Times
Test at 2am (off-peak) and 9pm (peak). If 2am is fast, it's congestion. If both slow, it's throttling.
Does VPN Actually Fix TPG Throttling?
Sometimes. Here's why:
VPN helps when: TPG detects and throttles specific services (Netflix, streaming). A VPN encrypts traffic so TPG can't see what you're doing. No detection = no throttling = faster speeds.
VPN doesn't help when: TPG is throttling all traffic due to network congestion or data cap overages. A VPN can't fix an overloaded network.
Success rate: VPN helps ~60% of throttling cases. The other 40% are general congestion.

- Speed test without VPN. Record the number.
- Speed test with VPN (Australian server). Record the number.
- If no improvement: VPN won't help. Switch ISPs or upgrade.
